What is Start Up Street?

The Events:

We've indicated the one event that we'd most like to see you at, but feel free to come along to as many as you like.

Are you a member of the public?

// 'Public Day'

// Wednesday 31st August, 12pm - 4pm, King Street and 35 Stirling Arcade.

The Olympic Torch is coming to Stirling. It's also the day that Start Up Street launches in Stirling City Centre. The team will be out and about around King Street, and we'll also have our shop open in the
Stirling Arcade.

We'd love for you to pop in, say hello and share your ideas and inspirations for King Street. We want to know exactly what you think about living and working in Stirling!

We want to talk to you about what's important to you; buildings, services, people, skills and knowledge. What's missing? What works and what doesn't?

Do you have an idea for Stirling?

// 'Thinking about Ventures'

// Thursday 1st September, 5.30m - 8pm, 35 Stirling Arcade

This event is all about bringing together amazing minds - people who have ideas for Stirling, and want to see them come to fruition.

We will explain the concept of Start Up Street, and together pitch ventures and ideas to fill it with.

There will be an emphasis on longevity - this is not a pop-up venture. We want to build ideas that will last, and for that your knowledge and experience is second to none. We want to find the best way (or ways) of building small businesses; we'll be looking at building processes as well as ideas.

This will be an evening of discussion, idea generation and building - it's your chance to change the face of Stirling. We're really looking forward to meeting you.

Do you want to be part of making ideas for Stirling happen?

// 'Exciting Idea Generation'

// Friday 2nd September, 10am - 1pm, 35 Stirling Arcade.

This event is all about co-design, gathering minds together to help create a new vision for King Street. It’s about being visual, sharing ideas and building new ways forward together. We will ask you  to come up with ideas, together. We'll shuffle the group around and get you working with a complete mix of minds.

We'll work with the ideas created in the past two days of the project - build into them, tear them apart and start again.

We will ask you to build your own processes within the project - how would you like to build your involvement; how much time for planning or research is needed before you can move in/start making, teaching and selling?

We want to create an ideas gallery - examples of what could happen, what connections could be made, but we also want to establish a feeling of momentum, find people who are willing to champion these ideas.

Do you understand how business works?

// 'Idea Generation with a Commercial Context'

// Friday 2nd September, 3pm - 6pm, 35 Stirling Arcade.

This event is about gathering more of a community interest. The way in which Start Up Street fits in with and can compliment the existing infrastructure and networks within Stirling. There will be an emphasis that this is not a 3-6 month project. We'll talk about the longevity, the ways in which we have designed-in evaluation and factors to keep the idea running.

Asset Mapping is going to be a hugely important part of Start Up Street, and that begins with this workshop. We'll be asking questions such as; where are you, what do you do, what can you give? What part would you like to play? What would you like to see happening with Start Up Street?

We're also going to be focussing on venture creation, on pairing people together.  We'll be playing matchmaker, asking what could you do together, as businesses?

We're looking for exciting, innovative ideas; what have you always wanted to do, what could you trial in 6 months? What risks would Start Up Street allow you to take, what different directions could you try out?

We'll be working with you to help bring the ideas to life, make them visual and record them.

Everything about this workshop is to do with the commercial context of the ideas, we would like you to have that in your head right from the beginning.

We're really looking forward to meeting you and getting the conversation started.

// Just want to find out more and say hello?

// 'Doors Open Day'

// Saturday 3rd September, 10am - 6pm, King Street and 35 Stirling Arcade.

This is your opportunity to come along, meet the team behind Start Up Street and ask any questions that may have come up in the last few days.

The team will be on hand to work through ideas for ventures and business opportunities, working out the best way to make this work for you. So come along with ideas, scribbled on envelopes or just in your head! We'll help bring them to life.

The team will be on-hand to answer any specific questions that you may have, and to help to make your ideas into a robust plan.

We can't wait to meet you!

More information.

Start up street is a new way of producing ideas for Stirling. Basically, it’s about taking all the good stuff that already exists in Stirling and connecting it together in a new way. Its not rocket science but we think its something worth getting excited about.

Stirling has its up’s and its downs. You see, there is a really big gap between rich and poor and a very high level of unemployment so Stirling council want to fix this. They want to bring meaningful economic activity to Stirling’s citizens, especially its young people and in their own words are “determined to tackle this.”

 It's not all bad news though – lets not forget Stirling’s history, its castle, the tourism and the Thistles shopping centre…

 But we think the most exciting, worthwhile and accomplished part of Stirling is found in its people. In you. You possess the knowledge and the skills necessary to help transform the future of Stirling.

 Imagine a street where this local skill and knowledge is brought together to create something bigger. Something better. Stirling has the street – King Street. Now it just needs ideas to fill it.

 Imagine Nike filling the space, bringing treadmills in to run a free gym whilst giving them a space to sell their shoes at the same time. Or Stirling University coming in and setting up graphics classes to teach people how to develop graphics and brands for their start up companies. All you need to make this possible is space and some new ideas. Your ideas.

 We know about the space – now we want you to consider what shops or spaces you could start up.

 And it involves everyone. Young kids, Stirling’s locals, its University, the Archivists who keeps its history alive, Corporate companies here to bring in more money, Business gateways and Young emerging talents.

 The culmination of all of these resources, assets and ideas will result in the space on King Street being transformed. This wont be a quick fix, but with your help we can help rejuvenate Stirling into a hub of activity.
